Submerged Bay Park

Submerged Park of Baia - Submerged Bay

Cultural itinerary of the Phlegraean Fields

HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION

The submerged park of Baia is a protected marine area and represents, together with the submerged park of Gaiola, a unique example in the Mediterranean area of archaeological and naturalistic underwater protection.

In Roman times the area of Baia and the surrounding ones were the heart of the holiday of the aristocracy of the time and numerous private and public buildings rose along the coasts, present right up to the beach. Over the centuries following the phenomenon of the lowering of the soils typical of the bradyseism of the Phlegraean Fields, the buildings of the place have collapsed forming a submerged city, a sort of Roman Atlantis.

The famous Roman resort lies in the sandy bottom of the bay of Baia, between Punta Epitaffio and Punta del Castello, with a depth varying from a minimum of 2 meters to a maximum of 16 meters.

Among the most valuable environments, which today are found sunken, there is the nymphaeum of Punta Epitaffio, triclinium serving as a banquet hall dating back to the time of Emperor Claudius, whose statues have been transferred to the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields where the environment has been reconstructed.

The extraordinary value of these sites is given both by the remarkable state of conservation of the archaeological finds, as well as by their objective historical archaeological value. Mosaics, traces of frescoes, sculptures, road layouts and columns, are submerged at about 5 meters below sea level between anemones and starfish.
